I PARCHI LETTERARI® IN CALABRIA “JOURNEYS TO THE FUTURE
OF MEMORY” - I PARCHI LETTERARI IN SILA - GIOACCHINO DA
FIORE
Dante Alighieri, in the Divine Comedy, placed
Gioacchino da Fiore in the fourth circle of Paradise,
in the second ring, among the “Knowing Spirits”.
A great Calabrian spirit, born and raised in the heart
of Sila. From Celico, where he was born around 1130, to
Cosenza, Luzzi, at the Sambucina Monastery, Corazzo,
where he became a priest and Abbot, Pietralata, San
Giovanni in Fiore, where he built the Protocenobio, and
finally Pietrafitta, where he died in 1202.
More than anyone else, Gioacchino da Fiore represents
Sila, the places that inspired him and allowed him to
develop his philosophy, becoming one of the most
interesting figures of Medieval Christianity. His works
have often been quoted and used and today he is known as
one of the great teachers of European civilisation.
