I PARCHI LETTERARI "IN THE DIMENSION OF THE JOURNEY" -
THE PLACES: FAVARA
Favara is found 338 metres above sea level near
the hill of Montangella and the valley of
Favara. The city includes almost 32,000
inhabitants. History confirms that a first
settlement was established in the 13th century
near the Castle that had been previously built
by Federico II Chiaramonte in 1270. |

Even today Favara has an urban layout that has a
Medieval flavour, with linear stone houses, alleys
alternating with steps, with small roads paved in
volcanic rock.
The compelling poem by the Arab poet ‘ABD AR-RAHMAN
(Version by Mario Luzi)
Gathered around Favara of
the two seas is all that has valour and merit
A pleasant life, the beauty of these places
without
compare
your waters branch into nine brooks
and their separate streams, what an enchantment!
The battle of love is fought on the land at the
centre between each of the seas
and at the shores of your channel passion awaits
Oh, the lake of two palms, what a marvel! And
the sovereign building erected in the middle of
the lake that surrounds it
The pure and clear waters from the two branches
of the sea
are liquefied pearls and the lake is a smooth
blade
The branches of the gardens stretch themselves
out to see the fish that play
and swim, the fish in its limpid waters
and the birds sing in the cover of trees
When mature, the oranges of the island
are fires that burn on the Chrysolite branches
and the lemon resembles the pallor
of the lover
after nights filled with distance and torture
and the palms resemble two faithful lovers
on guard against enemies in a fortress that they
cannot penetrate
or a suspicion that hovers over them
and they
dare to put the thoughts of those who doubt them
to the test
Oh, the palms of the two seas of Palermo
you are drizzled by
abundant rains without pause
rejoicing in the decrees of destiny
grant yourselves every wonder
and the events shall be peaceful
In unison with God, protect the loving people
unassailable love stands in your shadow
I saw this with my own eyes
but to hear speak of similar delights I would
believe it to be deceit
