Originally the name of the first inhabited area was Angiņ since it was positioned on an elevation (present day Monte Suso) between Cattolica and Siculiana. Around 1600, due to a lack of water, the town was abandoned and the settlement was moved to the plain below.
While stopping in this town it is recommended to also pay a visit to the Oasis of Montallegro, managed by LIPU, and located five kilometres from Eraclea Minoa.
