I PARCHI LETTERARI® IN CALABRIA “JOURNEYS TO THE FUTURE OF MEMORY” - I PARCHI LETTERARI IN SILA

Sila is located in the heart of Calabria. It is one of the most suggestive and popular places for tourists, just as it once was for a variety of travellers. The territory of Sila, which includes the provinces of Catanzaro, Cosenza, Crotone and Vibo Valentia is made up of a granite-crystalline massif which is bordered by the Sibari Plain to the north, the Crati Valley to the west, the Lamezia Plain to the south and the hills of the Marquisate to the east. The territory is subdivided into Greek Sila, Large Sila and Small Sila. It contains the region’s oldest National Park, included among the first to be founded in Italy, with the historic name of The National Park of Calabria (1968) and today known as The National Park of “Sila” with the function of safeguarding areas of environmental interest over a total area of 73,695 hectares.

From Virgil to Costabile, dozens of writers, learned travellers and scientists have visited and discovered this splendid place which provides literary inspiration.

"a beautiful young cow grazes on the great Sila: they (the bulls) arouse passionate battles among themselves with frequent injuries: the black blood wets their bodies and their horns are turned towards their competing adversaries, pushing with deep groans, which echo throughout the forests and the vast sky”
Virgil, from the Georgics

LA SILA
The lake
the firs
you are right
to call it
Switzerland.
Adding
the small flowers
and in the distance
the young shepardesses,
the tranquil cows, bathed
in the setting sun,
golden, of course,
and perfect behind the pine trees.
Eat
with appetite,
sleep until you are rested.
Then if
those people live there in winter
with pumpernickel bread
and the wolves,
what do you care?
You are warm,
in the city,
telling your friends
about the fragrant green
of the pine trees.

(Franco Costabile)
